During the late 1930s, inspired by his friends Oskar Schlemmer and Willi Baumeister, Bissier turned to abstraction. After the war he developed his own inimitable style, reminiscent of Asian calligraphy. His “sign language” later exerted great influence on the early works of German Informel. From 1955 on, Bissier developed a mastery in creating small formats, “miniatures”, of which the present work is a typical example. The artist was twice invited to show his work at the documenta in Kassel, in 1959 and 1964.
