Gerhard Richter: Portraits. Glass. Abstracts at the Albertinum in Dresden

Gerhard Richter - VII 91

To mark Gerhard Richter's 90th birthday, the Gerhard Richter Archive presents 40 paintings and objects selected in close collaboration with the artist in the exhibition Gerhard Richter: Portraits. Glass. Abstracts on view at the Albertium in Dresden from February 5th through May 1st, 2022. The exhibition focuses on the themes mentioned in the title, to each of which Richter dedicates one of three rooms in the Albertinum. Here, the small-format Self-Portrait (836-1) from 1996 serves as the leitmotif for a selection that focuses on the artist's family portraits, while mainly examples from recent years have been selected for the Abstractions room, including Abstract Picture (952-4), with which he officially concluded his painterly œuvre in 2017. In the third exhibition room, glass and mirrored objects create images that repeatedly renew themselves with each passing moment through their vistas and reflections.

A large number of the exhibits come from his own holdings as well as from the Gerhard Richter Art Foundation, supplemented by museum loans and private collections.
