Günther Uecker is noted particularly for his relief-like nail paintings, some of which can be classified as Kinetic Art. As the third member of the artist group ZERO, Uecker mainly dealt with light and optical phenomena as well as structural series and vibration ranges that could be influenced by the viewer. After his ZERO period, this preoccupation led to Uecker's famous nail paintings. The artist hammered nails not only into canvases, but also into furniture, musical instruments and household appliances. He combined nails with the topic of light and thus developed series of light nails and kinetic nails. Later, natural materials such as sand and water were also included in his space concepts, and created an interplay of the various elements of light, space, movement and time.

Günther Uecker at Galerie Thomas

Works by Günther Uecker have had a fixed place in the inventory of Galerie Thomas for many years. In 2010 the gallery was able to show the major work „White Spiral / Bright Spiral“, which in 1970, the year it was created, was presented at the 35^th Biennale in Venice in the German Pavilion. In the catalogue „Masterpieces Modern“ of 2020 the gallery was able to include an early and rare, colourful work by Uecker: „Sonnenüberflutung (Transgression)“ of 1963. It was the year the ZERO Manifesto was published, stating “ZERO is round” and “The sun is ZERO”.
