Like many other artists, the theme of painter and model fascinated Baumeister. He repeatedly made the motif the theme of his paintings, for the first time in a series of paintings in 1913. In the years from 1920 to 1933 he created a large number of paintings of the themes of painter, draughtsman, model, studio – united in the catalogue raisonné as the period headed „The Painter 1920-1933“. After a long period of increasing abstraction, he took up the theme again, using earlier figurative elements. He reduced both human figures to a few shapes and lines, but still the motif is easily recognizable.
January 22nd this year marks Willi Baumeister's 130th birthday.
