Since 1979, the artistic work of Pierre Soulages revolves around the concept of the "outrenoir", "going beyond the black". In his almost always monochrome paintings, Soulages treats the black colour in different ways, creating contrasting, sometimes flat, sometimes violently relief-like surfaces that always reflect the light differently. So these works go beyond the black of their material and are actually light paintings, which, depending on the light and external influences, but also depending on the inner sensation of the viewer, can convey the sensory impression of other colours. This is how Pierre Soulages expressed himself about this inner relationship between black and light in his paintings: “My works are not entirely black. The first work I painted like this was not painted with the colour black, but with the reflections that the colour black created. A mysterious light that moved me. To this day I am looking for this light."
