In 1946, Pablo Picasso created a series of coloured chalk drawings that portrayed his then-life companion Françoise Gilot. In his drawing "Nu debout (Françoise)", which was created on June 28 of this year, the elongated figure expresses both a hieratic austerity and a delicate grace. Picasso had met Françoise, then 21 years old, three years earlier, and just under a year after the drawing was created, the couple's first child, Claude Picasso, was born. Like “Nu debout”, all of the group's works are closely related to Picasso's famous painting “Femme fleur” from the same year in which he interpreted Françoise as a “woman-flower”.
