Marianne von Werefkin
gouache and pastel on paper
40,4 x 29,2 cm (16 1/8 x 11 1/2 in)
Kownow or Kowno is the old Russian-Polish name of the Lithuanian city of Kaunas, and the "green mountain", Lithuanian Zaliakalnis, is a district of Kaunas. Werefkin shows the steeply rising road to the elevation, to which there was still no funicular that was only built in the 1930s. Werefkin only outlines the people on the apparently rain-soaked street, in which the silhouettes of passers-by are reflected. Only at second glance does it become clear that many of the shadows have no physical counterpart, so that a mysterious, ghostly mood emanates from the painting.
