The present work, "Seated Ballerina" complements Jeff Koons' Antiquity series of figures depicting ballet dancers, whose iconography is based on porcelain figures from the Rococo period; they are made of painted marble or polished steel.
Our present edition of Seated Ballerina was commissioned by the Israel Museum, Jerusalem, on the occasion of the museum's 50th anniversary. It is the only work in the Antiquity series that is made of wood. There is another version of the work in colour-coated, highly polished steel. Koons also showed it in 2014 as a huge, 14-metre-high inflatable version shimmering in metallic colours in front of Rockefeller Center in New York.
