Along with Sam Francis, Joan Mitchell and Jean-Paul Riopelle, Jean Miotte may be called a co-founder of the art movement Informel. His concentrated pictures, reduced to the essential, are written in a "script" developed by Miotte. Asked in which art movement he would classify himself, he answered: "I hate thinking in stereotypes...one says of me - contemporary reduction, the other action painting and both mean the same thing...Abstraction is really about a new, different reality, about the expression of the individual perception of the environment, the reaction of the subconscious, the emotions precisely to this technically changed, alienated environment...For my part, I can only say: my name is Jean Miotte and I am a painter in today's world...".
