The intense colourfulness of "Target" is due to the use of 27 screens - technically speaking, this colour screen print thus resembles the complexity and multi-layeredness of Johns' paintings executed in encaustic. Here, Johns deliberately cites this irregular surface character of his paintings and adds new dimensions to the flatness of the print, so that at first glance they seem like paintings on paper.
