"Lovers" is the first of c. 24 (known) wood sculptures by Scherer. He created it during his second stay with his friend Ernst Ludwig Kirchner in Davos from mid-December 1923 to the end of January 1924. In a letter to his artist friend Albert Müller in Basel, Scherer writes: "I am working on a large wood sculpture, a group of two figures. I come across completely new things by hewing directly from the log, it is a task I really enjoy. [...] I owe this way of working to Kirchner, he has set me on this track, he has, as it were, laid open a blocked well."
