The woman depicted here with a cat is presumably Erna Schilling, Kirchner's partner since 1912. Cats are often found in the works Kirchner created in Davos. In July 1919 the little tomcat Boby came into the house in Frauenkirch near Davos. Boby's presence is documented in more than 100 works – one of them a real portrait - he is mentioned in Kirchner's diary and in many of his letters. Boby died in October of 1930, his successor in the spring of 1931 was another tomcat they named Schacky.
