"Monkey Love" shows a leitmotif of Alfred Kubin's art, which he revolved around in ever new forms throughout his life: the fateful relationships of the sexes, the entanglement of eroticism and fate in changing power constellations. Here, too, the fine lines tending toward the grotesque are still predominant in the early work. These were sheets that were surreptitiously passed from hand to hand in the Schwabing art scene around 1900, also because of their often pornographic content, and gave Kubin his first notoriety.
