Penck's matchstick men and graphic symbols, bringing to mind cave art, Asian calligraphy and graffiti, are his trade mark. The first works he created with these elements in the 1970s, were called Standart pictures. This is Penck's name for art that uses simple archaic symbols which can be understood by everyone, like traffic signs or brand labels. In 1972, 1982 and 1992, Penck was invited to participate in documenta in Kassel. During the 1980s he was considered one of the "Neue Wilde" (New Wild), who went against the trend at the time and painted representational motifs.
