William Turnbull is considered the most important Scottish proponent of modern abstract sculpture. Turnbull's sculptures were influenced by the ideas of Surrealism and Colourfield Painting; they are made of wood, stone or bronze. His sculptures as well as his paintings and graphic works were marked by a radical simplification of form and their material aspect always referred to nature.
