Since the 1970s Matt Mullican has been concerned with systems of meaning, representation and knowledge systems. The artist has created a non-verbal language system of signs and pictograms which he explores across various media including painting, sculpture, drawing, photography, film, installation and performance.
Mullican’s work has been shown in numerous institutional exhibitions, including Kunsthalle St. Annen, Lübeck, Germany (2022); Thomas Schu?tte Stiftung, Neuss/Holzheim, Germany (2019); de Young Museum, San Francisco (2019); Pirelli HangarBicocca, Milan (2018); Kunstmuseum Winterthur (2016); Haus der Kunst, Munich (2011); Metropolitan Museum, New York (2009); Museum Ludwig, Cologne (2005); Neue Nationalgalerie, Berlin (1997) and many more. Mullican participated in Documenta in Kassel in 1982, 1992 und 1997.
