Sam Francis repeatedly lived in Paris for a time and his painting ties in with the European tradition of "suggestive colour". The sweep of the gesture is reined in by the sensitive handling of colour. His paintings are based on a strong contrast of red, blue and yellow, their luminosity enhanced by a white background. While the large white plane opens up into a wide space simultaneously suggesting emptiness, infinity and meditative quiet, his bright colours proclaim energy, power and a lust for living and painting. Thus, colour and space are the basic factors of his painting.
