1985
33 x 22 cm / 13 x 8 3/4 in.
verso signed and dated

Condo came to New York in the early 1980s, soon belonged to the art scene of East Village, worked at Andy Warhol's Factory as, together with Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, and Julian Schnabel, he is seen as a revivalist of painting. He had his first solo exhibitions in New York. In 1984 he spent some time in Cologne, Germany, where he worked with artists of the Mülheimer Freiheit group. Condo lived in changing hotels between 1985 and 1995, rented studios in New York and Paris, and exhibited in the US and Europe. Condo's works are stongly influenced by the old masters, which is evident in the present self portrait, which, though very modern, is mindful of self portraits by Rembrandt.
