Jim Dine says about his work that everything he painted or drew, is a self portrait, even those works where his face does not appear: “C’est moi”. But the artist has also created true self portraits, in which his face is looking out at the viewer, for 60 years, in different techniques. The artist explains that of course he is always available as a model, and: „The human face, especially if it is your own, shows so much: the subconscious, the age, a real landscape of feelings – that never becomes boring as a theme.“ Making this visible is something the artist faces, including aging. And he always learns something new, about drawing, and about himself. Thus he titled an exhibition with 60 self portraits in Munich „I never look away“.
