Between 1949 and 1951 Ernst Wilhelm Nay created the so-called "fugue-paintings". He had left the war behind and his marriage to his second wife in 1949 also brought about changes in his private life. A series of colour lithographs inspired him to deconstruct forms. As in the musical fugue, Nay emphasized the abstract tendencies by altering and reversing groupings of forms in the image.
