Since childhood, Friedensreich Hundertwasser was fascinated by ships. As an artist he painted the „Singing Steamship in Ultramarine“ and „Mouth-Boats“. In 1967 he fulfilled his dearest wish and bought an old transport ship, built in 1910, in Italy. He had it restored for several years and then transferred it to New Zealand. The “Regentag” (Rainy Day), as he named it, became Hundertwasser’s home and studio, the artist lived and worked on the ship for ten years. In 2004, four years after his death, the ship was transported to Europe and today is lying in the guest harbour of the town of Tulln on the Danube.
