Günter Fruhtrunk

mixed media collage on canvas on chipboard
late 1970s
60 x 62 x 3 cm / 23 5/8 x 24 3/8 x 1 in.

One of the most important works of Fruhtrunks in a public location was the decoration of the "Quiet Room" in the UN-Headquarters in New York in 1978, together with the architect Paolo Nestler. Many of the elements Fruhtrunk used for that work can be found in detail in the present piece, except for a different colour scale. He used the principle of "altered arrays": Fields composed of coloured stripes are framed by narrow compartments. Here, the musical rhythm of the different lengths of the stripes is enhanced by the play of light and shadow of the relief and the appealing contrast of the materials.
