Comprehensive advice on art requires trust. For nearly 50 years, Galerie Thomas has been dealing in paintings and objects of Classic Modernism, German Expressionism, Post-War art, and contemporary art. In doing so, we have been able to contribute to the development of important art collections, establish friendly relationships with many foreign and domestic collectors, museums, and other institutions, and create trust. When it comes to purchasing and selling works of art, our clients value our advice and use our international contacts as well as our professional insight into the art market.
Founded in 1964 by Raimund Thomas, Galerie Thomas quickly gained an excellent reputation as a dealer of modern art and is now one of the world’s leading dealers in works of German Expressionism and Classic Modernism. Since 1996, Raimund Thomas has co-managed the gallery with his daughter, the art historian Silke Thomas.
During the first years, the gallery programme was centred on works of German Expressionism as well as Avant-garde art, with exhibitions of Gotthard Graubner, Yves Klein, Piero Manzoni, Josef Albers, Joseph Beuys, and Dieter Roth. This was soon complemented by art of the 80s with the "Junge Wilde" (Young Wild) from Berlin and the Italian "Transavanguardia". In 1978 Galerie Thomas scored a breakthrough as a leading gallery of German Expressionism with an exhibition of 100 works by Alexej von Jawlensky which had never been shown before. A further milestone in the history of the gallery was the acquisition of important German Expressionist works from the legendary "Rheingarten Collection".
During the 70s and 80s, Thomas further consolidated the reputation of the gallery in the field of German Expressionism through exhibition events such as the Blue Four cycle, beginning with Klee and proceeding to Kandinsky, Jawlensky, and Feininger. During this period, Classic Modernism became another pillar of the gallery’s programme. Starting in the 80s, works by Pablo Picasso, Marc Chagall, Max Ernst, and Fernand Léger were regularly showcased in exhibitions at Galerie Thomas.
The most important projects of the more recent past include the exhibitions Chaim Soutine (the first comprehensive presentation of his works in Germany for more than 25 years), Kandinsky, Watercolours, and Otto Mueller (with important works from a private collection), the exhibition cycle Meisterwerke I–IV, as well as solo exhibitions of important representatives of American Post-War art such as Tom Wesselmann, Frank Stella, and Jim Dine, not to forget an international exhibition project on occasion of the 75th birthday of Fernando Botero, a much-noticed presentation of his monumental sculptures in Berlin, in the autumn of 2007.
In addition to our exhibition events, dealing in works of art is an important part of our gallery activities. With its many years of experience and expertise, the gallery assists new collectors and art lovers in their purchasing decisions, no matter whether they intend to acquire individual works or put together a judicious and sound collection. Experienced collectors and institutions are supported in finding specific works. Over the years, some of the most important works of German Expressionism and Classic Modernism that were offered during that period have thus been sold through Galerie Thomas. Moreover, the gallery provides expert support and services in all matters concerning works of art, including the verification of authenticity, insurance, framing, restoration, archiving, and cataloguing.
